Lawmaker In West Virginia Wants Kids To Work For “Free Lunch”

April 25th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

The West Virginia House of Delegates recently passed Senate Bill 663, also known as the Feed to Achieve Act, with a bipartisan vote of 89 to 9 and is expected to be signed into law by the governor before the end of April.

The bill would create a partnership between private donations and public funds to make breakfast and lunch available for free to every student in West Virginia.

Ray Canterbury, a Republican member of the West Virginia House Delegates from Greenbrier said "I think it would be a good idea if perhaps we had the kids work for their lunches: trash to be taken out, hallways to be swept, lawns to be modwed, make them earn it.".

Canterbury believes that handing out free meals would destroy student work ethic and teach them that they don't have to work hard.

Meshea Poore, a Democrat from Kanawha stated in one of several  rebuttals, "I'm offended that anybody in this body would dare say that a child has to work for their meal. If they can't afford it, tell them to pick up some trash? Tell them to wipe down the chalk board? I cannot believe that anybody in this body would say a first-grader, a second-grader, a third-grader, a fourth-grader, a fifth-grader has to labor before they can eat."
