Lawmaker Wants To Lift Restrictions On Who Can Carry Guns On School Grounds

An Eastern Shore lawmaker in Maryland says he wants to lift restrictions on who can carry guns on school grounds. Delegate Mike McDermott says he has introduced two bills on the issue. One bill would give school boards and superintendents the option to designate teachers, staff or administrators, who would be eligible for a concealed carry permit to bring guns onto school grounds. The other would allow off-duty or retired police officers who are still qualified under the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act to carry weapons on school grounds. Allegany County School Superintendent Dr David Cox says no formal recommendation on the issue has come from the local school board, but he points out that there are already armed officers in some Allegany County schools. He says while he has no issue with having armed officers in schools, he is quick to note that that would only be a part of starting to address the problem…
