The recent rash of inmate on officer assaults at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cresaptown has Maryland lawmakers gearing up to take another shot at amending the state’s death penalty laws. The death penalty in Maryland, led by Governor Martin O’Malley, has been abolished. Supporters of the bill to repeal Maryland’s death penalty turned back eight amendments this past General Assembly session intended to create exceptions under which convicted killers could still be executed. The amendments rejected by the Senate and the House included exceptions for people who murder police officers and inmates who kill while in prison. Delegate Leroy Myers , who is not seeking re-election, said that those amendments should be re-visited. Without a death penalty, he says inmates serving multiple life sentences are in a situation with no consequences, and nothing deterring them from killing again…
