Legislation To Expand Heritage Areas

November 8th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

With the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority looking to expand the local Heritage Area to include several Georges Creek communities comes good news from the federal level. U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, along with Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin of West Virginia have introduced legislation designed to strengthen tourism in Maryland and West Virginia by securing federal funding for a new National Heritage Area in the Mountain Counties of Maryland and extend existing National Heritage Areas in Wheeling and in southern West Virginia.  The new region would encompass 16 counties in West Virginia and two – Allegany and Garrett – in Maryland.  Locally, the expansion plans being discussed include additional coal heritage districts and historic transportation routes. Areas considered for the expansion are along state Route 51, the National Road and the scenic railroad byways, state Route 36, the Great Allegheny Passage and the historic districts of Mount Savage. Authority Chair Andy Vick and executive director Dee Dee Ritchie have been working for much of the year to see the expansion come to fruition…
