Since 1996, Let’s Beautify Cumberland! has initiated and completed a variety of projects throughout the community, in-cluding “Beauty Spots” at the entrances of neighborhoods and gardens and parklets through the area. More than 15 years later, the effort is still going strong albeit with a new leadership team. The organization was founded by Butch Hendershot and Paul Yockus, both of whom led the organization for many years- and although Councilman Hendershot opted not to seek re-election or continue as leader of the project-he passed the torch to newly elected councilperson Nicole Wagoner, Downtown Manager Ed Mullaney and Virginia Decker. Their important work and dedication has inspired three area volunteers to continue those efforts. Virginia Decker, Ed Mullaney and Nicole Wagoner have agreed to serve as the new chairpeople of the LBC. Decker and Mullaney said they consider themselves stewards of the work started by Hendershot and Yockus. Nicole says there are some changes that are going to be put into effect, including adopting a new project each month during the summer. First up is an old standby- Queen City Drive- which will be the focus on May 31st.
Thirty volunteers are needed for weeding, placing weed barrier, and spreading mulch on Queen City Drive near Baltimore Street from 7:30a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31st.
