Local Gas Price Now Highest In Maryland

April 8th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

While national and Maryland gas averages have dropped since the beginning of the week, regional gas prices across the country, as well as in Maryland have been both up and down, as stations receive summer-blend gasoline.

Today’s national average price of $2.04 per gallon represents a decrease of two cents on the week but an increase of 23 cents on the month. However, drivers are saving 35 cents per gallon versus this same date last year.

Maryland’s average price at the pump is a penny higher than the national average at $2.05 per gallon. The state average is three cents lower compared to last week but 26 cents more than last month.  However, the state average is 35 cents per gallon cheaper than last year on this date.

Summer-blend gasoline has begun to make its way to fuel terminals in many parts of the country, though it can take a few weeks because fuel travels through pipelines at four miles per hour. Continued refinery maintenance and rising demand may also lead to higher prices in some areas.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) closed Thursday at $37.26 per barrel, more than a dollar lower than last week’s price.  As of Friday early afternoon, the commodity was trading higher at over $39 per barrel.  The EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration) reported that the U.S. crude oil inventory fell for the first time in the last eight weeks by 4.9 million barrels for the week ending April 1, 2016, compared to the previous week.  U.S. crude oil production fell for the tenth consecutive week for the week ending April 1, 2016 and is at the lowest level since November 14, 2014.
