Local Law Enforcement to hold crime awareness program

August 1st, 2015 by WCBC Radio

“America’s Night Out Against Crime” will be held on August 4 in Cumberland to promote awareness of crime prevention activities, safety and neighborhood unity. Residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, it represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination to help make neighborhoods a safer place year round. National Night Out involves over 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.  Cumberland’s celebration will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Somerville Avenue between First and Second Streets in front of the Salvation Army this year. The event will include Cumberland Police & Fire Department exhibits and demonstrations, music, inflatables, children’s activities, a magic show, a donut-eating contest, free food & drinks, and lots of giveaways. A “kick-off” kickball event will be held on Monday, August 3 at the South Penn Elementary School field at 6 p.m. Any business or individual wanting to become involved or make a donation for sponsorship is encouraged to contact Terri Hast at 301-759-6517.
