The Allegany County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host a free event for the public on Monday, January 18, 2016, at Allegany College of Maryland in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.  The program will be held in ACM’s Zimmer Theatre located in the College Center beginning at 7 p.m.

The theme of the event this year will be “Freedom is Not Free: Give Peace a Chance.” Pastor Darin Mency will provide a dramatization of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and there will be special performances by the Frankfort Middle School’s steel drum ensemble, Teal Steel, and the Metropolitan AME Mass Church choir.

Transportation for any interested Allegany County Public School student will be provided.  The pick-up route locations and times are as follows: Mountain Ridge pick-up at 5:30 p.m.; Allegany pick-up at 6:00 p.m.; Fort Hill pick-up at 6:15 p.m. Once the program concludes, this route will reverse to drop students off at the above locations. Parents will be notified of the estimated return time to the schools in order to plan to pick up their children accordingly.

Any student interested in attending this event and utilizing ACPS’s transportation should notify Mr. John Logsdon at 301-463-5751 no later than January 15, 2016. ACPS students attending the event, regardless of whether they are transported by the school system, will receive a service-learning credit after writing a reflection and confirming their attendance.

Visit the NAACP’s website, www.naacp7007.org to check the status of the program in the event of inclement weather.
