Local Retired MD State Employees Seek Help From Delegation In Keeping Prescription Benefits

Local retired Maryland state employees are seeking help from the Western Maryland legislative delegation in keeping their prescription benefits. A letter from the state was sent to all Medicare-eligible retirees this summer saying they must find new prescription coverage. The retirees were told prescription coverage would no longer be part of their health care benefits package, with the coverage ending December 31. According to officials with the state, nearly 50,000 people will be impacted.  Earlier this month, a number of local retirees and current employees attended a public session conducted by the District 1 delegation at Allegany College of Maryland. The discontinuation of state prescription benefits was set in motion under the Comprehensive Pension Reform Act passed in 2011. The act contained a clause that called for the termination of the prescription plan for retirees in 2019. State Senator George Edwards says he expects the problems to be addressed by legislation that should come up for discussion in the early part of the General Assembly Session which starts in January….
