Local Sears store expected to close in February

November 6th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

No official announcement has been made, but various media outlets are now reporting that the Sears store at the County Club Mall in LaVale will close by mid-February.  Company officials did not release an official list of the locations that will close- but employees at the local Sears have been told about the planned closing.  Liquidation sales will begin in December, and the store will be permanently closed within 60 days. The local Sears manager told WCBC News he could not comment while a corporate spokesperson said that they are not disclosing the store list or number of stores remaining. Sears would be the second major “anchor store” to leave the mall in a little more than a year  following the Bon Ton closure in August of 2018. Allegany County Commissioner David Caporale says losing Sears will be a definite blow to the local economy

Maybe they should try to save the downtown by relocating Sears to the bricks. *sarcasm*

If this were a large city such as Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Cincinnati this would be just another unfortunate sign of the times. It’s still devastating to those involved but there are other job opportunities available. In a small town such as ours it is a much larger blow to the local economy. Jobs are lost, more families will lose an income with no way to find other suitable work. Ultimately more families will have to move from the area to find work and a new life. The tax base will be reduced, school enrollment will drop, more unsold houses will be in the market and so on and so on.
It’s a downward spiral and the local government ans pseudo governmental agencies are positive that giving tourists something to do on a weekend or a summer day trip will solve all of our increasing problems.

In the interest of all concerned, our elected officials should do everything in their power to re-locate the Seats Store from Country Club Mall to the Cumberland Mall somewhere near the boutique hotel downtown. That way we can help everyone out. Keep jobs in the area, increase the tax base, fill the unused car park, and run some of the riff raff out of town to make our downtown a fuller, more welcoming destination for our of towners. See we can work together to correct the errors of the past.

Hobo tours on Baltimore Street would give the local economy a much needed shot in the arm! Sears is old news.

Sears as a brand is dead. Their lines are available on line and in local stores. This is true everywhere – Carroll County saw their Sears go recently as well. The big retail stores are gone – replaced by point and click. Sears will not relocate downtown or to a smaller space- those stores have been gone for a long time – ask Romney.

The days of big retail areas are going fast, which is why a massive shopping complex for Maryland Avenue to Oldtown Road and towards 68 on Baltimore Avenue will never be. You need an economic base HERE to support that. Drive by tourist stops will not do it.

      > Yes, the flow of tourists through this area is supposed to be the panacea to resurrect our failing economy.
Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.
The pedestrian mall has failed, Canal Place is failing, ridership on the railroad is dropping so now they are flogging the new River Park.
It’s deja vu all over again.
