Local students sign letters of intent

Mountain Ridge High School student, Niven Mchugh Hegeman, has signed her letter of intent to pursue post-secondary education at the University of Maryland – College Park. Niven has been offered an athletic scholarship. She will be playing soccer while pursuing an undecided bachelor's degree.

Principal Gene Morgan stated, "I wish all our female athletes played as hard and with the dedication and heart that Niven displays. I wish her great success at Maryland."

Niven is an full-time senior, a member of the National Honor Society, and is currently taking dual enrollment college courses and four Advanced Placement courses as part of her senior schedule.

University of Maryland is an NCAA Division I school that is part of the Big 10 Conference. Her soccer coach, Gene Lescallette, said that, "Niven is a remarkable player, with a special set of soccer skills. She not only brought those physical abilities and assets to the team, she brought leadership and a level of competitiveness that was infectious; the girls trained hard and played harder because of that drive and desire. I think her accomplishments in high school will help her successfully transition to college-level soccer, and wish her well for this next step in her soccer career."

Niven was the Times-News Player of the Year, 1st Team All Area, and First Team All AMAC for both the 2014 and 2015 soccer seasons. Niven was excited and said, "I am really looking forward to playing for Maryland and being a turtle."

Fort Hill High School student, Timothy Eugene Friend II, received a very unique 18th birthday gift as he signed his letter of intent to pursue post-secondary education at the West Virginia Wesleyan College. West Virginia Wesleyan is an NCAA Division II school that is part of the Mountain East Conference.

Timmy has been offered athletic and academic scholarships. He will be playing football on both the offensive and defensive line.

Head Coach, Todd Appel, had this to say, "Timmy has been a godsend for the last four years at Fort Hill, not only as a football player, but as a person. He has brought alot of things to our football program that others couldn't. He is very special indeed."

Timmy is an full-time senior, and has taken numerous Advanced Placement and Honors courses throughout his four years at Fort Hill and currently possesses a 4.11 GPA.

He stated, "I am very blessed at this opportunity and I thank everyone I have played with and everyone that has mentored me over the last four years."

Allegany High School student, Hunter Scott Wilhelm, has signed his letter of intent to pursue his post-secondary education at West Virginia State University. Hunter has been offered both academic and athletic scholarships. He will be playing tight end for football while pursuing his bachelor's degree in Sports Studies.

Principal Mike Calhoun stated that, "Hunter is an outstanding young man both on and off the field." During his senior year, Hunter is taking a full academic schedule with four Advanced Placement courses.

West Virginia State Univeristy is a NCAA Division II school located in Institute, WV, that is part of the 
Mountain East Conference.

Hunter stated that he is excited to have this opportunity, and can't wait to be a Yellow Jacket.
