World War II veteran Clifton E. Brooks Sr. will be honored this weekend with a special ceremony dedicating a sign which will be erected at the north entrance of Keyser. The sign, declaring Keyser the home of Clifton E. Brooks Sr., a cryptologist with the Tuskegee Airmen, was sponsored by Aubrey Stewart Project founder T.J. Coleman and designed and made by E&S Fabrics. It will be erected at the end of Memorial Bridge, to be seen by those coming into Keyser from Maryland. Coleman is the same person who raised funds for the erection of a sign at the entrance of Piedmont declaring the town the home of World War II veteran Aubrey Stewart, who was a member of the Wereth 11, a group of African-American soldiers who were murdered in a snowy field in Belgium. Brooks, 96, who decoded messages during the war, was just honored last month when the City of Keyser named the South End Park in his honor. The sign ceremony will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. at the home of Washington-Smith American Legion Post 152 on Virginia Street in Keyser.
