Loggers Meet With Lawmakers Over Luke Mill Closure

A group of about 250 with interests in logging gathered at the Garrett County Fairgrounds Tuesday evening to meet with lawmakers from Maryland and West Virginia about the impact the closing of Verso's Luke Mill will have on them.

There are over 300 producers who ship to the mill, and a shutdown of any duration will create a devastating hardship on the loggers, many of which are in significant debt due to the cost of equipment. Keeping the mill as some type of paper production plant is said to be a priority. State Senator George Edwards spoke with Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schultz yesterday afternoon…

    More capitalists trying to operate without capital. Running on debt, not savings or retained earnings. Tapped out like the rest of the country. Perpetually borrowing at low interest with no hope of paying off the principle. Ain’t the Fed grand?

      > It’s the local banks that hold the notes on the trucks, skidder/loaders and other equipment. When the 300 producers start to default on their loans there will be a lot of equipment being repossessed and sent off to auction. I’m assuming those auctions won’t be local.
