On Friday afternoon, 03/16/2012, at approximately 2:40 PM, a lone white male entered the First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union branch office on Main Street in Lonaconing. The suspect, wearing rubber gloves and a hood pulled up over the top of his head in an apparent attempt to disguise his identity, approached the tellers and demanded all their money. The suspect never displayed a weapon, but kept his hand in his pocket as if to indicate he had a weapon there. The tellers complied with the suspect’s demands and handed him an undisclosed sum of cash which he placed in a plastic bag he had brought with him. The suspect then exited the rear door of the credit union, after instructing the tellers not to set off the alarm, and fled on foot in the direction of Douglas Avenue.

            A credit union employee was alerting 911 from an office in the back of the building while the robbery was taking placed. Law enforcement agencies were immediately dispatched to the scene.

A Deputy with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office was in Lonaconing and responded to the area. As the Deputy turned onto Douglas Avenue he observed the suspect walking up the sidewalk on foot. The Deputy exited his vehicle and ordered the suspect to stop. After the suspect refused several orders to do so, the Deputy forced him to the ground and placed him under arrest.

Additional members of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, Troopers with the Maryland State Police, and Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) all responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The scene was processed by evidence collection technicians with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

As a result, 67 year old Alexander Denning Devault Jr., of Pasadena, Maryland, formerly of Midland, is being charged with Robbery, Theft, and Resisting Arrest. Devault was being questioned by Investigators and processed, and is currently awaiting an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner.

All of the cash taken during the incident has been recovered. Investigators determined that the suspect did not possess a weapon during the robbery. None of the credit union employees were injured during the incident.
