Lonaconing Native Gets State Appointment

Maryland’s Secretary  of  Public Safety and Correctional Services  has appointed a Lonaconing native as the departments new government communications director. Secretary Steven Moyer on Friday announced that selection of  Robert B. Thomas Jr. as director of communications. The Western Maryland native’s focus is to expand the department’s social media presence, as well as training staff in emergency response, crisis and risk communications and providing transparency to one of the state’s largest departments. The University of Maryland government and politics graduate began his career in 1975 as a police officer in College Park. In November 1978, Thomas was appointed as a deputy state fire marshal with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, an agency of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Thomas rose through the ranks of that office and retired in January 2006 at the rank of chief deputy. During his career, he worked as director of public affairs from 1983 through 1996 as well as serving as one of the spokesmen for the Department of Public Safety during that same period.
