Luke Mill closing coming sooner

May 11th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Less than two weeks after announcing the closure of the Luke paper mill by June 30, Verso announced this morning the mill would actually be closing down production on May 31. Luke Local 676 announced the change on its Facebook page, commenting, “We are not sure how this will be handled and as soon as we receive that information we will post it.”  The union also noted in their post that “the company is obligated to pay wages and benefits through June 30.” Verso’s Luke mill employs approximately 675 people from Mineral, Allegany and Garrett counties. The union’s statement went on to encourage all employees to “stay focused on the job at hand. The union’s ultimate goal is to keep the facility in an operational state for a potential sale.”

Hey!! Thanks for the heads up VERSO!! Stay focused on the job at hand?!!! That’s the way it goes in the manufacturing business. Use them to their fullest potential until the last minute and kick them to the curb! What a slap in the face. Well, at least they get wages and benefits paid until June 30th, along with a severance. Bayliner gave a severance package to salaried employees only. The hourly workers got a whopping $75.00 Walmart gift card and a farewell luncheon for their years of hard work and dedication. Our last day of work was the day before Christmas Eve, December 23, 2008. Merry Christmas folks! Here’s a Walmart gift card. Thanks for your service! What a joke!

      > Babbs, thanks for reminding us concerning what happened at Bayliner. We need to remember these events of the past and how our relatives and friends have been treated by local business. They are not your friend, no matter the seeming concern and the friendly hello. You are just another piece of equipment to be used and/or eliminated as they choose.
If you remember the old TV show, “The Outer Limits” the business you work for is “The Control Voice”. They will control your life, just google it.

I guess in 6 months when the few don’t get hire are told to report to a worthless class to find work and then get bashed for being unemployed

      > Unfortunately people still think that the unemployed are lazy. How many times have you heard; “there’s work out there for those that really want to work”. This opinion is changing, especially in this area, as so many of us know someone that’s been in this situation.
