Despite the problems of parent company Verso, Allegany County officials say the Luke Mill is on solid ground and isn’t going anywhere. The falling stock price and layoffs at Kentucky and Maine plants by Verso Paper Corp., the parent company of the Luke mill, had some segments of the community concerned about the local operation’s stability. The secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Mike Gill, visited the Luke mill in September came away impressed by the mill's facilities and management. The company’s new Communications and Public Affairs Manager Miranda Kessell was introduced during the most recent meeting of the county commissioners. Kessell, who replaced longtime plant spokesperson Patsy Koontz who recently retired, noted that millions of dollars have been invested into the Luke Mill in the past year- demonstrating the company’s commitment…
