M. Scott Sweitzer has been promoted to be Allegany County Government’s Roads Division Superintendent. This position reports to Paul F. Kahl, PE, Director of the Department of Public Works. Sweitzer, a 30-year employee of Allegany County Government, has held a number of positions of progressive responsibility in the Roads Division. Hired as a Roads Division Utility Man, he subsequently became an Equipment Operator. Sweitzer held management positions as Roads Division Foreman and Roads District Supervisor for the Western District/Frostburg. For the past eight years Sweitzer was the Bridge and Traffic Control Maintenance Supervisor.
Sweitzer is a native of Allegany County and a graduate of Fort Hill High School.
He resides in Cumberland with his wife, Mary.
Kahl stated: “Mr. Sweitzer brings a wealth of experience to the Allegany County Roads Division. He has been successful in many previous positions with the Roads Division. I look forward to his leadership.”
The Roads Division has 66 employees. The Roads Division is responsible for the paving and plowing roads and controlling the adjacent area vegetation. Allegany County has 533 miles of roads to maintain which are spread over 425 square miles. There are 312 miles of tar and chip roads, 126 miles of gravel roads, and 95 miles of black top roads.
Road maintenance is performed by employees who are based in one of the four garages strategically located throughout Allegany County: Central District/Cumberland, Northeast District/Little Orleans, Southeast District/Oldtown, and Western District/Frostburg. There are a number of pieces of specialized equipment utilized and operated by Roads Division employees.
