Man Convicted Of Sex Crimes Sentenced

The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced Thursday, June 07, 2012, that Marvin Dale VanMeter age 63, of Oldtown, Maryland was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Gary Leasure to 20 years in the Division of Corrections with 10 years suspended for one count of Sexual Abuse of a Minor, and to 20 years in the Division of Corrections with 10 years suspended to one count of Sexual Abuse of a Minor-Continuing Course of Conduct. The sentences are to run consecutive for a total of 20 years of actual jail time. Upon release Mr. VanMeter will be placed on 3 years supervised probation with numerous conditions, register as a sex offender for life, have no contact with the victims or their families, be evaluated for and complete any recommended sex offender and drug/alcohol treatment, submit a DNA sample to the sex offender registry and violate no laws of this or any other state.

The case stemmed from incidents between the dates of June 1, 2011 and December 2011 in which Mr. VanMeter, who had temporary care and custody of two minor males, engaged in sexual acts with these two male victims after providing them with alcohol.  An investigation was conducted by the Combined County Criminal Investigation Unit, specifically Detective Roger Plummer who through the course of the investigation identified Mr. VanMeter as the suspect. 

Prosecuting the case for the State was Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Jacqueline R. Brandlen.  Mr. VanMeter was represented by Michael Stankan, Esq. of the Office of the Public Defender.
