At approximately 648pm Cumberland Police officers were dispatched to an assault involving a handgun.
Officers arrived at the Utah Avenue residence making contact with the juvenile victim and his guardian. It was discovered that prior to the arrival of officers the alleged victim had been threatened with a handgun. Officers spoke with two people who reside there and received permission to search the residence for the alleged handgun. Officers located a handgun hidden in the drywall of the residence along with a large amount of marijuana and prescription pills.
Officers placed Richard Alan Nair III in custody for the assault. Officers discovered that the handgun used in this assault had been reported stolen on September 30th, 2018 when a burglary was reported to the police department. A second handgun was also reported stolen during this burglary. Officers were able to locate the second handgun and other stolen property at a Paca Street residence after several persons of interest were developed.
Nair was taken to police headquarters for processing and later taken before the District Court Commissioner for his initial appearance. At the conclusion of the hearing Nair was held on a without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
The investigation into the burglary at the Massachusetts Avenue residence is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Cumberland Police Department or the Allegany/Mineral County Crime Solvers.
