Over the past two weeks, WCBC has been reporting on a proposed move of hundreds of prisoners from DC area jails to federal prisons in West Virginia, including one located less than an hour from Cumberland off of Interstate 68 at Hazelton.
Thursday, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice told WCBC that the situation was, in his words, “terrible,” and said that efforts were continuing to stop the transfer at all levels.
Friday, US Senator Joe Manchin announced he had received assurances from US Attorney General William Barr that no more out of state inmates would be transferred to FCI Hazelton or FCI Gilmer during the pandemic. Gilmer did receive some transfers, five of which tested positive.
