Former Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel died Sunday at the age of 95.
Mandel had spent the weekend with family in St. Mary's County for a birthday celebration. He died peacefully Sunday afternoon.
He was Speaker of the House when then Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew was elected Vice President. In those days, there was no Lieutenant Governor, so Mandel assumed power under the constitution.
His second term was smudged by a corruption conviction which saw him spend 19 months in a federal prison. Eventually, the conviction was overturned and Mandel returned to office for the final day of his term.
In recent years, Mandel has been seen as an elder statesman in Annapolis, and has headed a state commission on structure and efficiency.
Governor Larry Hogan has ordered state flags lowered to half staff.
