Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 4:00PM, Maryland’s Congressional delegation will convene to review the state of the Chesapeake Bay and the essential role federal-state-local-private partnerships that have played in restoring the health of this national treasure – the economic heart of the region. While EPA serves as the lead federal partner, the Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership incorporates expertise from federal agencies such as USGS, NOAA, USDA, NPS, USFWS, DOD, and Homeland Security. States are counting on these federal partners to provide data, analysis, interpretation, and coordination. Maryland cannot and should not bear the cost of obtaining or generating this information on its own.
Congress soundly rejected the recently proposed cuts in federal funding to Chesapeake Bay-related programs in the fiscal year 2017 appropriations. The President’s FY 2018 budget jeopardizes the progress that has been made and the partnerships that have made it possible.
