Maryland lawmakers are putting table games – on the table. Officials originally estimated that building 5 casinos would rake in 660 million dollars for the state each year. But revenue is lower than expected at the casinos built so far, and the delayed opening of the Baltimore and western Maryland locations is expected to cost the state $179 million. As a result, its expected there will be a strong push for a bill to legalize table games such as blackjack and roulette during the upcoming general assembly session.18 Casinos in neighboring states have already added table games. A factor officials believe also contributed to Maryland's lower casino revenue figures. State Senator George Edwards tells WCBC News that while the issue has been talked about in recent years, he expects far more serious discussion come January. Like slots, any official action on table games would have to come to fruition via a referendum question for the voters in 2012.
