Maryland Food Bank to Commemorate 40-Year Anniversary

March 15th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

As part of its 40-week campaign marking 40 years of leading the fight against hunger in the state, the Maryland Food Bank (MFB) will host a community HEART – Healthy Eats Are Really Tasty – Market on Tuesday, March 26, alongside Tabitha’s Table, one of MFB’s most dedicated network partners.

HEART Markets are a twist on typical food distribution events, providing fresh produce and groceries with music, nutrition education, and food demonstrations in a fun and high-energy environment. Students from MFB’s culinary training program, FoodWorks, will be on hand to offer food tastings, while the food bank’s SNAP Outreach team will be in attendance to assist residents with completing and submitting SNAP applications. Additional resources from local community organizations will also be made available.

During the event, MFB will highlight the innovative ways the food bank works with network partners like Tabitha’s Table to provide individuals and families in need access to nutritious food across western Maryland’s largely rural areas. An estimated 43,490 residents are food insecure in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties, a region in which the food bank’s Hagerstown branch distributed enough food to provide more than 6.7 million meals last year.

In the coming weeks, the food bank will travel across the state to host similar events on the Eastern Shore and in Baltimore.
