Maryland Heritage Area will Expand in Cumberland

Having received a stamp of approval from the Maryland Heritage Area Authority- City and Canal Place officials can now move ahead with plans to expand the local district with the goal of creating more tax incentives and grant opportunities in the process. The current heritage area in Cumberland extends beyond the 11 acres of Canal Place.  The proposed expansion would extend the Mechanic and Centre street line from the Viaduct north to The Narrows. The southern portion would be extended along the towpath south to Candoc Lane and the Gene Mason Sports Complex. On the West Side, it would extend to Spruce Alley on Greene Street. It would also be extended west on Washington Street to include the F. Brooke Whiting House and Museum at 632 Washington. Canal Place executive director Dee Dee Ritchie…
