Maryland Hospital Cutting Jobs

A Maryland hospital will be cutting jobs starting next week. Sixty-five employees at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore will be getting pink slips. The Baltimore Business Journal reports that the hospital says a cut in Medicare pay as a result of federal sequester and the low rate increases from the Health Services Cost Review Commission are partially to blame. Hospital officials say this round of layoffs and another in August should help them cut 20 million dollars. The system also owns Baltimore Washington Medical Center which will cut jobs and Maryland General Hospital will lay off 50 workers and close its OBGYN department. Locally, Kim Repac, Sr Vice president and Chief Financial Officer for the Western Maryland Health System, tells WCBC News that the local system actually addressed potential sequester cuts last year…
