The Maryland House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday heard testimony on House Bill 335. That bill, developed and introduced by Delegate Leroy Myers would allow children in Maryland to attend public school in an adjoining county if they live more than 30 miles away from the closest school in their home county. Delegate Kevin Kelly who has spoken out strongly against the bill in recent weeks came under fire from a number of callers to WCBC's "Dave Norman Show" for what some called an embarrassing presentation at the hearing. One caller said that the delegates presentation was sad and that it actually hurt the efforts of the parents pushing for the bill. The Allegany County school board, facing $5.3 million in state budget cuts, voted last June to phase out the Washington County School Choice program, which allowed about 40 children in Little Orleans to attend school in Hancock. Parents and the Allegany County commissioners objected to the decision, which ultimately ended up in a lawsuit that was unsuccessful.
