Maryland Infant Mortality Rate Hits Record Low

Maryland's infant mortality rate is at a record low according to Governor O'Malley who along with state health officials announced the latest figures Thursday morning during a visit to Baltimore Medical System's Highlandtown Healthy Living Center. The Governor announced the infant mortality rate in 2012 was 6.3 per 1,000 live births, down six percent from 2011. The mortality rate for African American infants declined by 14 percent, to 10.3 per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate fell by 21 percent between 2008 and 2012, which translates to 159 fewer infant deaths in 2012 than in 2008…
