Maryland National Guard MPs Bound For Guantanamo

July 5th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Thirty members of the Maryland National Guard are deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to guard detainees captured as terrorism suspects since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Col. Charles Kohler says a deployment ceremony was held Tuesday in Westminster for members of the 29th Military Police Company.

Kohler says the soldiers will deploy for nearly a year to the detention facility at the U.S. naval station in Guantanamo Bay. He says they'll first receive training at Fort Bliss, Texas.

There were 79 prisoners at Guantanamo as of June 22, including 29 who've been cleared to be sent home or to other countries for resettlement. The others are mostly men who have been charged or convicted by military commission for war crimes, or whom authorities believe are too dangerous to release.
