Although the effort fell short, the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition strongly opposed the governor’s controversial gun-control measure during the 2013 general assembly. The Maryland Association of Counties (MACO)- as it often does with hot button controversial issues- took no position. That allowed the relatively new Rural Coalition the opportunity to take a position representing western Maryland and other agricultural parts of the state. Allegany County Commissioner Michael McKay, who chairs the coalition, said the law “Demonizes owners of a massive number of commonplace weapons by banning the purchase or transfer of those weapons”. He adds that gun control measures in other parts of the nation have proven largely ineffective in combating violence.
