U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (Both D-Md.) are calling on the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Rules Committee to sponsor an amendment protecting American election systems from unknown foreign ownership. In response to the revelation that a Russian oligarch has become the largest investor in a fund tied to the company that hosts Maryland’s election systems, including voter registration and election results websites, Maryland’s senators have been working closely with Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Ranking Member Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to require elections vendors to disclose foreign ownership and control as part of the Secure Elections Act that is set to be marked up by the committee on Wednesday.
“Given the unanimous assessment of the Intelligence Community that Russia interfered in our 2016 presidential election, all levels of our government must take every necessary precaution to preserve the security and integrity of America’s free and fair elections,” the senators wrote. “Access to these systems by a foreign government could provide information for intelligence or other purposes adverse to U.S. national security interests.”
