Maryland SHA Sets Interstate 81 Project

April 23rd, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin cleaning and painting steel beams on nine bridges on the I-81 corridor in Hagerstown. The $2 million bridge painting project will be complete spring 2018, weather permitting.

Motorists traveling under these bridges may encounter shoulder closures and temporary single lane closures during off-peak hours while crews install work platforms, but the majority of the work will not impact traffic.

The project will include blasting away old paint and repainting the steel beams. This work is part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program and will help extend the service life of the bridges and protect the metal parts of the bridge from weather.

Manolis Painting, Inc. of Baldwin will clean and paint the following bridges:

Approximately 77,000 motorists drive I-81 each day in this corridor. Currently, there are five active work zones within the 11-mile corridor. SHA urges motorists to allow for extra travel time, slow down and stay alert.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
