Maryland Students Lead Nation In Success On AP Exams

February 24th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Maryland education officials say the state's students have led the nation in success on Advanced Placement exams for the 10th year in a row.

Citing new data from the College Board, state officials say 31.7 percent of Maryland high school seniors earned a score of 3 or higher on one or more AP exams. The tests are scored on a 1-to-5 scale, and 3 is the threshold for earning college credit at many institutions.

Nationally, 22.4 percent of seniors got a 3 or higher on at least one AP test.

More than half of Maryland students took at least one AP exam. However, only 21 percent of AP test takers were eligible for free and reduced price meals, indicating that poor students are underrepresented in the AP program.
