Maryland Unemployment Claims Jump To Over 42,000 Last Week Alone

In the week ending March 21, 2020, over 42,000 Marylanders filed unemployment insurance claims with the state Department of Labor Division of Unemployment Insurance amid the coronavirus crisis. WBAL reports that last week,  a total of 42,334 Maryland residents filed for unemployment insurance., according to state officials. The week ending March 14, 2020, only 3,852 residents had filed claims. 

The highest number of claims are in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County, while the lowest number of claims are in Kent County, officials said.

U.S. Department of Labor officials report the week ending March 21, 3,283,000 United States citizens filed for "adjusted initial" unemployment insurance claims, a 3,001,000 increase from the previous week.

The week of March 21 marks "the highest level of seasonally adjusted initial claims in the history of the seasonally adjusted series," officials said in a news release.
