Although the matter ultimately went before Maryland’s highest court- it was with little fanfare or acknowledgement earlier this summer when Allegany County Board of Education Attorney Gary Hanna announced that the Little Orleans issue had been resolved in the board’s favor. In the spring of 2011, Superintendent David Cox recommended the elimination of the arrangement that had allowed about students who live in the Little Orleans area in eastern Allegany County to attend Hancock Middle-Senior High School in western Washington County. The recommendation was for deemed necessary as one measure to address budget shortfalls. A group of Little Orleans parents, headed by Linda Martin, did not take the proposal sitting down- hiring legal counsel and appealing to the local board, the state board, Allegany County Circuit Court and eventually to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Martin said from day one that forcing the students to spend nearly an hour each way traveling to and from Cumberland schools as opposed to the brief 10 mile trip to Hancock simply made no sense…
