Maryland’s Two-Tiered Drivers License Program For Undocumented Immigrants Now Permanent

Despite some strong opposition, Maryland's two-tiered driver's license program for undocumented immigrants is now permanent and has been signed into law. A program that had been enacted in 2009 was set to expire in 2015. Under federal law, the license could not be used as a federal ID, meaning a license holder could not use it to board an airplane or enter a federal building. Opponents argue the measure encourages illegal immigration, and could be used by potential terrorists. Supporters say the bill will make highways safer, since any driver, regardless of immigration status, would be able to get a driver's license, assuming they pass the driver's license test.
