The Cumberland mayor and City Council on Tuesday announced the disbursement of FY 2015 Hotel/Motel Funds to various nonprofit organizations- with the Scenic Rail Road and Canal Place receiving the largest allocations. In early September,  a total of 16 groups made reguests to the city officials seeking to obtain a portion of the approximately $60,000 being made available.  Although the city made just  under  $60,000 available, the requests exceeded $90,000. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad received the highest award, receiving $15,200. The tourist train operation had requested $23,500. Next highest was the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority with $14,920. City Councilman David Kauffman emphasized that the funding comes from a designated source of revenue generated by tourists staying in local hotels and motels. It is not money that could be used for other purposes….
