Mayor and Council to Authorize Parklet Operation

August 30th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council tonight is expected to authorize the official establishment and operation of the Cumberland Welcome Center at Heritage Park under the maintenance of the Downtown Development Association. While the objective has been to create a welcome station for those tourists visiting downtown Cumberland- the focus of the project has been on the parklet’s longtime resident Cathy Coughenour. Coughenour, who refers to herself as “residence free’ and not homeless- has said that she has no plans to vacate the parklet even when the center opens. Mayor Brian Grim says in reality, the “Cathy issue” has not played a major part in the city’s actions. He says his focus is on the economic development and tourism aspect of the center.
