Despite some significant challenges- Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss said any notion that the city is planning on abandoning efforts to replace the Washington Street bridge is simply unfounded. While there is a relatively clear path for replacing the other closed bridges on the city’s West Side on Fayette and Cumberland streets- Washington Street is a more complicated replacement because of the design parameters, historical requirements and the still uncertain funding picture. During a general update on the bridges presented during the most recent city council meeting, city solicitor Michael Cohen presented a less than optimistic outlook for Washington Street’s closed bridge. Given the approvals necessary due to it being located in a designated historic district- finalizing funding and gaining approval could prove difficult……
Mayor Morriss agreed that there are obstacles- but none so great it would halt the effort to replace the bridge….
