McKay Says Secession Not a Reality

While he shares some of their frustrations, don’t look for Allegany County Commissioner Mike McKay to join with a group of Maryland residents trying to secede. Western Maryland is made up of five counties whose residents largely vote Republican and feel under-represented at the state capitol, run by Democratic Governor  Martin O’Malley and a Democrat-controlled legislature which is viewed by many as among the most liberal in the nation. The movement began in July as a social-media effort, with activist Scott Strzelczyk starting a Facebook page titled the Western Maryland Initiative. The movement, however, has since garnered significant media attention, with Strzelczyk talking to everybody from National Public Radio to The Washington Post.  McKay tells WCBC News that although he doesn’t like the high taxes or progressive social agenda that have dominated recent general assembly sessions- secession is not a reality. Instead, he says, the proper course of action is to try to work with those in office- despite the philosophical differences…
