MD Jobless Claims Increase for Second Straight Week

New unemployment claims were up in Maryland for a second straight week. Maryland Department of Labor officials reported that 56,126 Marylanders filed first-time unemployment claims last week- 223 of those from Allegany County. In May, Maryland had a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.9%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Wednesday. That puts Maryland's job picture in far better shape than Michigan, Hawaii and Nebraska, where more than 20% of the workforce is unemployed. However, Maryland had a slightly higher unemployment rate than neighboring Virginia and the District of Columbia. Nationally, employers added 4.8 million jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1%, though the job market is far short of regaining the colossal losses suffered this spring.
