MD Secretary of Commerce Planning Trip To Allegany Co.

June 26th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

WCBC News has learned that Maryland Secretary of Commerce Kellly Schulz is planning another trip to Allegany County in July as the Hogan Administration continues its efforts to help those affected by the closing of the Luke Mill.

District 1C Delegate Mike McKay says it’s obviously important for those directly affected, but it’s a priority for the entire region…

Another dog and pony show from our elected officials.
There will be the requisite wringing of hands, the expressions of sorrow, the righteous indignation, and hopeful good wishes for all affected followed by promises that they are working diligently in all of our best interests. There will be a photo opp and some choice sound bytes. Then they will pack themselves back up and head downstate.
The final outcome? No change for our community.

District 1C Delegate Mike McKay reminds us that there are a lot of jobs available locally for the displaced mill workers but then he adds this caveat, unfortunately the pay may be less than what the mill workers were earning.
To have a displaced mill worker try to maintain his life after losing his $22 or $24 wage to accept an $8 wage flipping burgers or building blinds would require him to work 24 hours per day.
Don’t forget that Delegate Mike McKay was one of the members of our local delegation opposed to raising the minimum wage. To him that’s acceptable pay in 2019. Should we really expect him to really work for better jobs for this area? He has already made known to us that the pay we receive is more than adequate.

Word on the street is that LaVale Dry Cleaning is hiring one or two people. That only leaves about 673 who still need jobs.

Maybe they will give us an update on the West Side bridge renovations which will be completed in 2026.
Here’s a question: Which will happen first – the West Side railroad bridge completions, the downtown mall open to traffic, or the beginning of the Rolling Mill construction?
