MD State Police Investigating NBCI Inmate Death

State Police are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive this weekend in his cell at a state prison in Allegany County. 

The inmate is identified as Dominic Anderson, 27.  He was an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution, Cumberland, Md. 

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators are conducting an investigation into this death.  They are being assisted by investigators from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The preliminary investigation indicates that during the evening of February 23rd, a correctional officer conducting cell checks found Anderson lying on the floor of his cell, where he was housed with another inmate.  Immediate medical assistance was summoned and correctional officers and medical staff provided emergency care.  County emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the inmate deceased. 

The scene was processed by Maryland State Police crime scene technicians.  State Police investigators are continuing to conduct interviews with prison staff and inmates.  Correctional officers and criminal investigators have developed information and evidence that indicates the circumstances surrounding this death are suspicious.  All possibilities are being considered and nothing has been ruled out at this time. 

Anderson's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.  The autopsy results are pending at this time. 

The investigation is continuing.
