The city of Cumberland’s planned $30 million project to mitigate problems stemming from the city’s antiquated combined sewer and storm water system has become a point of contention between the city council and the District 1 legislative delegation. As a result a meeting of all involved parties took place Wednesday morning in the Annapolis office of State Senator George Edwards. Mayor Brian Grim was frustrated to learn recently that the delegation, in correspondence with the Maryland Department of the Environment, expressed “serious uncertainties and concerns” over the planned city project. City officials say they have worked on a plan with the state to mitigate the problem of dumping overflow in the river by placing huge underground storage tanks under the Mason Sports Complex near the city’s wastewater treatment plant- with a price tag of $30 million. During the nearly one hour session, a representative from the MDE said that as long as efforts are continuing to address the overflow problem, and regulations are being followed, there shouldn’t be any penalties applied if issues develop after completion of the Cumberland project.
