Medical Marijuana An Uphill Battle In Maryland

A set of bills that would legalize marijuana for medical use in Maryland would likely not make it past the governor's desk. A spokeswoman for Governor Martin O'Malley told the Baltimore Sun that the bills would be targeted for veto should they pass this session. The reason is that O'Malley and other officials in Annapolis believe the law would be tossed out by federal judges. Attorney General Doug Gansler has said as much. And the state health secretary also has, repeatedly, criticized the bills too saying that his agency can no longer support any of them. The concept was addressed by a number of Allegany County constituents during a public meeting in January. At that time Delegate Kevin Kelly said he has sympathy for those in need of the drug for health reasons, but acknowledged that it would be an uphill battle to see such legislation approved anytime soon…
