Medical Marijuana Growers Interested in County Land

Medical marijuana has become big business- and apparently Cumberland and Allegany County are being looked at as potential hot spots to house a growing and/or distribution facility. During last week’s meeting of the Allegany County Commissioners in Little Orleans, Commissioners President Bill Valentine confirmed that the county has been contacted by five or six growers asking what they would need to come here. The discussion was prompted by a citizen who said he is aware of a grower interested in purchasing land in Pumpkin Center- if Allegany County ends up with a distrisbution facility. Maryland lawmakers made it legal for commercial entities to grow and dispense cannabis for medical reasons in 2014. State law has cleared the way for 15 licenses to be issued through May 31, 2016. Commissioner Jake Shade said once the state is ready to award licenses- he anticipates a very competitive process…
