Memorial Tenants Relocate in Preparation for Demolition

November 15th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Tenants at the former Memorial Hospital have one month remaining to relocate as the city takes steps to rid itself of what has become a money pit — costing taxpayers an estimated $2.5 million over the past 2 1/2 years. Official notice was distributed in mid June to the dozen tenants who occupy portions of the 250,000-square-foot space. It's estimated the cost of the demolition, an action the city agreed to in late May,  may be as high as $3.5 million. According to the city comptroller, the hospital buildings, at 250,000 square feet, have cost taxpayers an estimated $2.5 million over the past 2 1/2 years. City Administrator Jeff Rhodes said the remaining tenants will be out of the building within the next month and demolition could begin in the spring of next year.

Would someone explain why it cost taxpayers $2.5 million please? Have we been paying for the Footer Dye building, too? If I can’t sell my house and decide to rent it I am still responsible for the taxes.I understand that. So if it is the case with the hospital, then why was it allowed to be rented passing the taxes to the people in the county?
