Midland Fire Ruled Arson

September 3rd, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports no injuries were reported when a deliberately-set fire occurred in a six-unit apartment building early Thursday, according to the Allegany County 911 emergency center. The 1:40 a.m. fire originated in a vacant apartment of the three-story building owned by Droll D&D Rentals. The occupants exited safely and the fire was quickly extinguished. Damage was estimated at $200. The fire was discovered by a neighbor tenant. First-arriving firefighters reported smoke showing in one window of the building. Deputy Fire Marshal J. Ray determined the fire occurred when “person(s) set fire to combustibles,” according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. Midland Volunteer Fire Department was in charge of the fire operation. Fifty volunteer firefighters from Shaft, Frostburg, Lonaconing, Barton, Mount Savage and Tri-Towns fire departments responded and were on the scene until 4 a.m. Maryland State Police and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office also responded. Unconfirmed reports at the scene indicated police were called to the apartment building earlier in the night for a disturbance complaint. A person in the neighborhood said police are often called to the location. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the fire marshal’s office at 301-729-5021 or the Arson Hotline at 800-492-7529.
