U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), Vice Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced the Committee-passed Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies fiscal year (FY) 2017 funding bill includes increased funding for rural water infrastructure.
“Maryland cities and towns need to upgrade their water and sewer infrastructure, but they can’t afford to do it on their own,” Senator Mikulski said. “Rural communities need a government on their side. These federal investments will create construction jobs today that will build an infrastructure to keep communities healthy and safe in the future.”
The legislation provides $1.684 billion for loan and grant programs, an increase of $3 million over FY16 levels. This funding supports rural communities nationwide to help make critical infrastructure investments including upgrades to water and sewer systems. Municipalities, County Governments and non-profits can apply for competitively awarded grants and loans through U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development regional offices.
Last year, Maryland communities benefited from $24 million in water and sewer grants and loans.
In the next step of the appropriations process, the bill will move to the Senate floor for a vote, which has not yet been scheduled.
